SECOND GRADE SCIENCE
I CAN STATEMENTS:
The Nature of Science:
Safety
o I can follow the classroom rules and procedures and explain how they give us order and keep us safe.
o I can describe how to use my senses safely in science class, so that I can participate in a lot of fun learning activities.
o I can sign my Safety Contract and then take it home and teach it to an adult that I live with. After they sign it, I’ll bring it back and put it in my Science Journal.
What is Science?
o I can be a citizen scientist by observing and asking questions about my world and recording my ideas in my journal.
o I can be a citizen scientist by safely following the Scientific Method Scientists use to try and answer questions.
o I can use the correct names for certain scientists and describe what they specifically do. (For example, a paleontologist studies dinosaurs and fossils).
o I can observe safely to learn about my world.
o I can communicate my ideas and listen to the ideas of others to make connections to activities in science class and in the world.
o I can use science tools properly to investigate to learn about my world.
o I can record my ideas on activity pages and in my journal and share them with others to get feedback.
o I can include pictures with titles, labels, and captions to show my observations.
EARTH SCIENCE
I Can Statements:
o I can describe how humans use air in their
everyday lives.
o I can investigate to prove air takes up space and has weight and record my ideas.
o I can investigate to prove that air has pressure that changes with temperature and o I can identify moving air as wind and can tell about the weather tools that measure its speed and direction.
o I can describe types of moving air that can change environments and give examples in my journal.
o I can explain that air, water, and heat cause weather and changes in weather.
o I can observe and document the warming and cooling of air and define the term weather front.
o I can give examples that show air has water in it. (clouds, fog, steam, etc.)
o I can use tools to collect, compare, and record changes in temperature of air.
o I can observe and describe how water changes between the three states of matter in the atmosphere.
o I can draw, label, and describe the water cycle using the terms accumulation, evaporation, condensation, precipitation, and transpiration.
o I can describe how clouds are formed and match which type of weather is associated with different types of clouds.
o I can recall that weather changes occur due to energy changes.
o I can talk about the results of experiments and ask questions to get more information.
PHYSICAL SCIENCE
I Can Statements:
o I can describe a force as a push or pull and
model ways to move objects using force.
o I can demonstrate the relationship between forces and motion by moving different objects in different ways by using different amounts of force.
o I can describe how motion can increase, change direction, or stop, depending on the force applied and record examples in my journal.
o I can explain how the change in motion of an object is related to the size of the force and that more force is needed to change a heavier object.
o I can demonstrate and describe how some forces act without touching using magnets and gravity.
o I can research and record ways that force is used in daily life.
o I can communicate my ideas and listen to the ideas of others to make connections to activities in science class and in the world.
LIFE SCIENCE I CAN STATEMENTS:
o I can discuss a variety of ways that Living things cause changes on Earth.
o I can research an animal to learn how its physical traits help it meet its needs for food, water, energy, and shelter and record my ideas in writing, typing, and artistically.
o I can compare the environments of different living things and identify the threats to living things in each and record my ideas in art projects and in my journal.
o I can observe, explore, describe, and compare living things in Ohio to each other and to wildlife found in other regions.
o I can research a plant to learn how its physical traits help it meet its needs for light, water, air, and space and record my ideas in writing, typing, and artistically.
o I can observe and ask questions about the natural environment and describe how Scientists investigate to answer questions in order to develop new technology.
o I can communicate my ideas and listen to the ideas of others to make connections to activities in science class and in the world.
