Science Tip # 2
"Seek answers but also appreciate the magic of the unknown!"
A Little About Me:
Mespo Elementary Science and Tech Teacher
Hi, I'm Mrs. Chilson. I grew up in a small town, graduated from a small school, and then after college came back to teach in the same small school. I'm pretty sure that Tom Petty wrote One Story Town just for me!
All kidding aside, I graduated from Bloomfield High School in 1986, and after earning a degree in elementary education from YSU in 1991, I returned to the Bloomfield-Mespo school system to teach. I was first hired as a K-2 Title I Reading instructor, but since I am flexible and adapt well to change, I have now taught every grade level K-10. I even taught gym for two years! Currently, after earning a Masters Degree in Conservation Biology & the Teaching of Science from Miami University, I am the K-5 Science and Tech teacher. Additionally, for the 2011-2015 school years, I donated a lot of time to the Mespo Elementary School as I designed and maintained the school website.
I love teaching and hope to instill a love of learning in my students. I never want to be a 'stagnant' teacher, so I frequently read professional resource books, attend workshops, and network with other teachers. I also work hard to create fun and interesting lessons, and I strongly believe that inquiry, music, art, and movement should be integrated into the classes that I teach. I am also passionate about the environment, and I want to help my students understand the threats to our world, so that they can include greener practices in their daily lives.
On a personal level, I began dating my husband Bill during high school, and we have been married since 1993. He's a great guy and puts up with a lot of 'teacher quirks' (never throwing things away in case they can be used in the classroom, hikes to catch tadpoles or monarch eggs, hatching turtles in the kitchen window, listening to endless conversations about kids & teaching methods, money spent on books, books, and more books... you get the idea).
Anyway, together we have three awesome kids- Kate, Nick, & Jake. Kate, a graduate of Kent State University, lives in Seattle, WA and works in marketing. Nick recently graduated from Ohio University during the COVID epidemic in the field of Environmental and Plant Biology and is working for Geauga Parks in Ohio. He enjoys hiking and biking and working outdoors. Jake graduated from the Cleveland Institute of Art where he studid photography, glass blowing, drawing, painting, and other artistic endeavors, including weaving. He is restoring an old farm house and hoping to make an artist retreat! We also have three black labs named Sidney, Sadie, and Skylar; and since people keep dropping them off, we have ten cats: StarFire, Dandelion, Jengo, Luna, Roxie, Clover, Moulder, Blackheard, Jinks, and Jasper.
In my free time, I enjoy photography, collage art, scrapbooking, gardening, golfing, weaving & sewing, and traveling with my family. I have also attended hundreds of concerts in all genres of music, and I absolutely love it when former students bake me cakes for the 4th of July, invite me to weddings & baby showers, write me letters, and make me feel so special. That's what keeps my heart in teaching!
